LMC makes history with city’s first Residency Programs
6/13/2018
History was made as Laredo Medical Center announced the city’s first Primary Care Residency Programs for Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. The announcement was made during a press conference on Monday, June 4 in the LMC Community Center, located at Tower B, 1st floor.
The graduate medical education programs came to fruition via a partnership led by Laredo Medical Center, along with its academic partner, the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine.
The three-year program is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
To fill the 16 residency positions, about 100 interviews were conducted with applicants from osteopathic schools throughout the United States.
A new class will be admitted each subsequent year and by the end of three years, 2021, there will be a total of 48 residents in the programs.
This accomplishment represents the culmination of years of hard work to develop and implement the hospital’s graduate medical education curriculum and is hailed as an unprecedented milestone for LMC and the community. Both programs are slated to start on July 1, 2018.
“We are pleased to launch this historic endeavor for the benefit of our community. We are committed to training the next generation of physicians,” said Enrique Gallegos, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer for Laredo Medical Center. “The residency programs will enable us to improve access to quality care for all those we serve.”
