Laredo Medical Center Nurse Jesus Romero Receives National Award for Nursing Excellence
12/8/2022
Jesus Romero, a registered nurse at Laredo Medical Center for four years, has received a national 2022 Nursing Excellence Award. Romero is one of 10 national winners selected.
Surrounded by his peers, Romero was surprised with the recognition by hospital leadership who presented him with two crystal plaques for the hospital-based and national awards he received, a cash award, and congratulatory remarks from Laredo Medical Center CEO Jorge Leal.
“Jesus is an excellent representation of the nurses who are making a difference in the patients we serve at Laredo Medical Center. Jesus is caring and dedicated to the nursing profession, and we are so proud of Jesus for putting Laredo Medical Center and our city on the map by winning this distinguished award,” said Leal. “We are honored to know that one of our frontline healthcare heroes represents the best of the best among our nation’s nursing professionals.”
The Nursing Excellence Award was created to honor the critical role nurses have played in treating patients throughout the pandemic. The peer-nominated award program was open to qualifying RNs and LPNs working in a direct patient care position who consistently demonstrate characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence. These characteristics include outstanding care, compassion, service and innovation, and reflect the efforts of someone who is a demonstrated team player and/or mentor to others, is a leader in times of crises, and who regularly promotes health in the community.
Born and raised in Laredo, Romero knew at a very young age he wanted to be a nurse. After being the first in his family to graduate from college, he realized his dream in 2018 when he joined Laredo Medical Center as a graduate nurse. With four years of nursing experience, Romero is currently an RN charge nurse in 5C.
Working with his 5C teammates is what Romero enjoys most about his job at Laredo Medical Center. His most memorable experience is working during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Nursing is a rewarding profession. I encourage everyone to show compassion and remember that you do not necessarily have to be a nurse to positively impact a person’s life,” says Romero.
In addition to receiving the Nursing Excellence Award and cash award, Romero received a copy of “Shining the Light on All the Right – Celebrating the Art of Nursing Around the World” by Mark and Bonnie Barnes, co-founders of The DAISY Foundation, an international movement created to recognize and express gratitude for extraordinary nursing.
