Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving is November 25, but that shouldn't be the only day of the year we express how thankful we are. Several studies have shown that long-term gratitude, practiced for 10 or more weeks, makes us healthier and more optimistic.
Here are some ways giving thanks improves our lives and steps to take to be more grateful every day.
Benefits of Gratitude
. Thankfulness has been known to boost immunity, improve sleep and inspire us to exercise. It also reduces the risk of heart disease and neurodegeneration in addition to lowering pain, inflammation and blood pressure. One study found that those who journaled about gratitude for two weeks also reported having fewer headaches, less congestion and reduced stomach pain.
. Daily gratitude can reduce anxiety, depression, burnout and frustration while increasing feelings of optimism and cheerfulness.
How to Practice Gratitude Daily
. A common way to begin this daily change is to keep a gratitude journal. You can buy a journal with pre-made prompts, such as writing about your favorite moment of the day. You can also start with a blank journal if you are feeling more creative. Experts suggest writing down at least three things, people, places or experiences you are thankful for daily. Martin E.P. Seligman, the author of Flourish (A Visionary New Understanding of Happiness and Well-Being), also suggests writing why the items on your list make you feel grateful.
. Your family and friends need to know how much you appreciate them. Whether it is through a text message, in a handwritten note, or face-to-face, take time often to say thank you to the people you care about. Another way to get the whole family involved is to make a gratitude jar. Every day, ask each family member to write something they are thankful for on a piece of paper and place it in the jar. Then, at the end of the week, the responses can be shared aloud for all to enjoy. Try adding this to your dinnertime routine as a way to strengthen social bonds, generate meaningful conversation and increase communication.
. When teammates feel appreciated, there is an increase in positivity and productivity, and they are less likely to leave the company for a new job or take sick time. Small gestures, such as sending congratulatory cards or flowers to employees on special occasions, can also go a long way. Consider surprising your colleagues with treats, celebrate work anniversaries with a small token of thanks or initiate monthly gratitude awards.
